What's it like to train as a Hairdressing Apprentice with Andrew Collinge?
In the following case studies we chat to a selection of Apprenticeships that are undertaking their hairdressing training with Andrew Collinge Training.
We spoke to Brogan about what a typical day is like working as a Hairdressing Apprentice. Brogan is working towards an NVQ Level 2 qualification with Andrew Collinge Training and currently works at Options salon in Moreton, Wirral.
Why did you decide to train as a Hairdressing Apprentice?
I started my Apprenticeship with Andrew Collinge Training in September 2016.
I chose to do a hairdressing apprenticeship because I liked the fact I would be training, working with the public and earning a living at the same time. This motivated me more than the idea of studying full time in college.
Tell us a bit about your schedule as an Apprentice
I enjoy the fact that I’m working every day. I like the fact that this is a practical job and I’m always busy in the salon. At the moment I work with a team of 4 stylists with a Saturday girl and my current hours are 40 hours per week.
Throughout the day I can do a variety of tasks from working on reception to cutting hair.
Whilst I help the senior stylists with their clients, I also have my own clientele.
Are there any characteristics you feel you should have to be a good hairdresser?
To be a good hairdresser I think you need to be able to talk to people easily and get on with a variety of people. I think you should be quite artistic and willing to learn on the job.
Any tips for Apprentice Hairdressers?
I’d recommend that you stay focused whilst you’re training. Use this time wisely and take this opportunity to learn new skills. I think working as an Apprentice is the best way to become a hairdresser. In an apprenticeship you learn all the skills you need whilst also learning to deal with people.
How do you keep up with hair trends?
I keep up with hair trends through social media, going out and about and seeing the styles people are wearing and I also read alot of magazines. It’s also good to take note of the hairstyles that are popular with the customers in the salon.
